I grew up in a graveyard. Yes, you read that right. My father was a cemetery caretaker (read: gravedigger) in a cemetery in Detroit. So I had a lot of time to myself (kids didn't want to come over to play, for some reason). I read a lot of books growing up. Most of them were British books so I tended to misspell a lot of words like "colour".

Anyway, eventually I escaped the graveyard and ran away to college at Central Michigan University to study scriptwriting. Unfortunately, I discovered all types of fascinating distractions which led to two things. My flunking out of Central and a memoir about my freshman year on the top floor of Troutman Hall called Troutman Penthouse.

However, I've still managed to write fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry for over thirty years. After my disaster at Central, I worked as a draftsman for the next 18 years because it was easy for me and I liked to eat well and sleep in a warm bed unlike many who chose the "glamorous" writer's life.

Like all things that really don't involve your first love, I tired of drafting and started a business that would keep me eating and under a nonleaking roof but would involve writing. WordsmithBob Copywriting. By this time I was already back in school and received a BA in Technical Communications with a minor in Creative Writing in 2002.

I married the diva Lisa Drew who sings Alto with The Rose Ensemble and is a paid soloist with Plymouth Congregational Church. She also will be featured soloist in a number of upcoming major performances. We share a house in the Camden area of North Minneapolis with her silly cat Mingo. And I have two smart and talented teenage daughters who live with their mother in Hastings.

Professional Bio

I've been helping business owners turn their websites from brochures into a sales and marketing tool since 2000. And I've been helping web designers get jobs billed faster by writing content for their customers so the designers don't have to wait for their clients to supply the copy.

I've also been supplying Search Engine Optimization services to clients who want their web-investment to get found and to designers who want to offer an extra service to their clients.

For the same period, I've also been writing almost every type of marketing material you can think of including radio spots, billboards, brochures and DVD scripts.

For fun and a little profit, I also write restaurant reviews for http://www.twincitiesdiningguide.com/ and manage their website. And I do a little freelance writing for magazines such as Tea Experience Digest.

Additional Information

Web Designers, are you tired of the delays waiting for copy from clients? Wouldn't it be nice to have a professional write great copy for the site so you can get it done, posted, and invoiced? I'll be happy to quote copywriting on any job you have. Call me at 612-226-7667 or email me at bob@wordsmithbob.com.

If your client wants to give you a brochure to put copy on their website, ask them this:

"If someone were writing a magazine ad for you, would you tell them to just take the copy from your brochure? If someone were creating a radio ad for you, would you tell them to just read your brochure on the air? Then why would you want your brochure on your website?"

"Your website is a 24/7/365 selling machine and should be treated as such. Get your copy written by a professional who understands the intricacies of selling on the web."

By the way, if you would like another "value-added" service to offer your clients without having to do any work, offer my copywriting services. I'll supply a quote for any job and you can just add your twenty percent fee and send it along with your design quote.
